The higher education sector consists mainly of universities which can be government and private institutions.
Australian universities offer a wide range of courses – from science to management and commerce, humanities to engineering, and law to health sciences. Australian universities rank among the world’s best by discipline, particularly in engineering and technology, medicine, environmental science, and accounting and finance.
There are 40 Australian universities (Plus 2 International universities having campuses in Australia) . Seven of Australian universities are ranked among world Top 100 universities. Academic year is normally divided to two semesters being Feb and July and some universities offer summer intake which is normally in October.

CQU University
Central Queensland University (alternatively known as CQUniversity) is an Australian public university based in Queensland. Its main campus is in North Rockhampton, Queensland. However, it also has campuses in Bundaberg, Emerald, Gladstone, Mackay and Noosa, as well as study and research hubs in Cairns and Adelaide respectively. In addition, the university boasts metropolitan campuses located in Melbourne, Sydney, the Gold Coast and Brisbane. As of 2012, the metropolitan campuses host both international and domestic students.
Griffith University
Griffith University is a public, co-educational research university located in the Southeastern region of the Australian state of Queensland. It has five campuses located on Gold Coast, Logan City, and in the Brisbane suburbs of Mount Gravatt, Nathan and South Bank.
The University of Western Sydney
The University of Western Sydney also known as UWS is a multi-campus university. It was ranked among the 600 university in the world by the Times Higher Education/QS World Rankings. The university has approximately 37,000 students, 2,800 of those are international students with 5,000 administrative staff.
RMIT University
RMIT University (officially the Royal Melbourne institute) is an Australian public university. It is the third oldest higher education provider in the state of Victoria and the seventh-oldest in Australia according to the THES-QS World University Rankings in 2009, RMIT is ranked in the top 10 universities in Australia.
Monash University
MONASH University is a member of Go8 (Group of Eight), an alliance of leading Australian universities recognized for their excellence in teaching and research. Go8 universities produce graduates who find full time employment sooner, begin on higher salaries and are more likely to move onto postgraduates studies than graduates from other Australian universities.
Curtin University
Curtin University is an Australian university based in Perth, western Australia with additional campuses in regional Western Australia and at Miri, Sydney and Singapore. As of 2010, the university has a student enrollment of 46,634 with a FTE of 33,509 of whom 19,872 were onshore or offshore international students and employed a staff of 3,020. Curtin was the first university in Western Australia to offer degree-level courses in film and television, furniture design and fashion and textile design.
